VIES (VAT Information Exchange System) is the official EU online service for validating VAT identification numbers issued by EU member states and Northern Ireland. It checks VAT IDs against national tax authority databases in real time and returns whether a number is valid, plus—where available—registered name and address information. Businesses use VIES to support VAT-compliant invoicing in cross-border EU trade, reduce the risk of incorrect VAT treatment, and document that a customer’s VAT ID was checked at a given point in time.
